Letter from the editor – July 2024

It’s July and we are excited to share our new issue with you!

As I write, the school holidays are almost here, and this month’s paper brings you lots of inspiration for fun family visits over the summer.

Talking of the end of the academic year, local charity Sal’s Shoes is asking for donations of your outgrown but good quality school shoes. It is estimated that 1.7m UK children attend school in badly fitting, unclean and incorrect clothing, and Sal’s Shoes is helping to change that with its School Shoes Fund. We took work experience student Alfie Spring to interview founder Camilla ‘CJ’ Bowry OBE at Sal’s Shoes storage facility in Edenbridge: find out how to donate on page 7.

Caterham Rotary Club announced the winner of their Young Writer competition in June, and we’ve got the poignant winning entry from Jaimin Patel, who is in Year 4 at Oakhyrst School, on page 23.

Deputy editor Rosalind Brookman visited Hever Castle at the end of June, to attend the launch of the refurbished Boleyn Apartment. It’s recreated in line with new research on how wealthy Tudor families decorated their homes, and Rosalind tells us why it’s worth a visit on page 14.

Hever’s head gardener Neil Miller brings us the answers to July’s planting posers, while Chantal Baker from Champ Consultants explains everything you need to know if you’re thinking about employing your children over the holidays.

We’ve loved sponsoring the Caterham Pumas U15 Kings this season, and we round that off with a final word from manager Josh Keating.

A quick reminder that we won’t be printing an August paper but will be back in September with our 200th issue, full of news, stories, local businesses and tips from our columnists. We’ve noticed that the paper is being picked up quickly from the shops and supermarkets whenever we stock up, so if you are ever unable to find a copy, please contact us and we’ll make sure we get one to you.

Have a great summer!
