Bumbling around

Woldingham resident Fiona Burke took this great shot of a red-tailed bumblebee investigating a grape hyacinth.

A social species, red-tailed bumblebees are abundant in the UK, and are found in a variety of habitats, including gardens, farmland, the edges of woodland, heaths and hedgerows. They nest underground, often in old vole burrows, or under stones and old walls.

Females are bigger than the males, but both have a large red ‘tail’, with some males also having three yellow bands on their thorax and abdomen.
